Finding an Item Without Finding It

As odd as the title may sound, it is possible and has happened to me repeatedly. I receive a call to search for a lost item. I arrive and begin the hunt. What I thought was going to be a quick hunt, turns into something longer than expected. Then partway through, someone stops to ask what I am doing. When I tell them, they light up and produce the item and share how they had found it earlier and had no clue how to return it. In the end, the item was found without finding it. People seeing me with my metal detector recognize what is happening and connect the dots. Watch the attached video for an example.
