Thinking About Renting a Metal Detector?

Renting or purchasing a metal detector to find a lost object can work. Usually success is achievable when your search area is small and you know where it was lost. BUT...... If the search area is larger, has trash and other metal items within it, or there is interference (rebar, fences, overhead wires etc.) surrounding it, the search becomes much more complicated.
Size of the search area is important. As the searcher covers greater area, multiple false signals are going to be heard. If you are unable to identify the different tones, strengths and chirps being made by the machine, it is likely you will become frustrated quickly. As well, poor swinging technique will become an issue if you have not had practice. This could result in missing your target. Keep the search area small.
If the search area has trash such as pull tabs, foil, bottle caps, old nails etc, these signals will require investigation. This can be time consuming and frustrating if you are unable to pick and choose appropriate targets. At the same time, underground sprinklers, wires and rebar will often mask your target's signal. Interference from nearby or overhead electrical wires can render a machine ineffective or require setting the metal detector up for the conditions. When renting, take into consideration the environment you will be searching in.
When renting a machine, take the above into consideration. As well, realize that most rental places have mid to low cost machines which are less effective and have fewer options. These can and will work in simple searches. Usually lost items are on the surface and will give a good signal, assuming all settings are correct and good technique is used. If your item is on the surface, a metal detector can be a good tool for locating your lost item.
If time and cost are factors in renting a metal detector, consider using a recovery specialist such as myself for Calgary and region or any of the individuals on TheRingFinders.com for other areas. Experience is critical when metal detecting. Using a recovery specialist will save you both time and money in the end. TIme, because we know what we are doing and money because many of us work on a reward basis, meaning you don't pay if it isn't found.
Finally, call me up. I will happily chat with you on the phone and offer you advice on how to use the detector you rented or purchased. Ultimately, my goal is to help you find your missing item and get it back where it belongs.
